2024 Tunghai Huayu BEST Long-Term Program

Our long-term program is designed to offer just that – an opportunity for students to not only learn but to deeply experience the essence of life in Taiwan.

Eligibility
-
Students who are currently enrolled at the University of Rhode Island, the University of Arizona, Palacký University Olomouc, or the University of Sheffield.
Applicants should inform their home institution and adhere to its regulations. -
Applicants should neither hold Republic of China (R.O.C.) citizenship nor possess an overseas Chinese student status at the time of their application.

Applicants should not be currently registered at a Mandarin training center, and they should not have been a degree-seeking student at any university or college in Taiwan.

Applicants should not be participating as an exchange student based on a collaboration agreement between an international university/college and an educational institution in Taiwan.

Applicants should not be concurrently receiving any other scholarship or subsidy from other government agencies or educational institutions in Taiwan.
Obligation

Mandarin Language Learning Requirement:
Participants are required to enroll in a minimum of 15 hours of Chinese language courses per week provided by THU’s Chinese Language Center. This criterion excludes time spent on cultural courses or excursions. -
Engagement in Community Service:
Engage in the design, planning, and leadership of English-related activities at a local elementary school. -
Language Proficiency Assessment:
Successfully complete both a pre-course placement test and a post-course assessment test to evaluate language proficiency. These assessments aim to measure the progress achieved during the language program.
Program Content
Language courses
240 hrs / per semester

Monday to Friday,
9 A.M. to 12 P.M. or 2 P.M. to 5 P.M. -
Transferable to your home institution's credits.

Class Size: Depending on enrollment and placement, with a maximum of 15 students per class.

Course Content: Students will be grouped based on their Chinese proficiency levels, sequentially enhancing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Placement Test:
Before the commencement of the course, it is required to complete the placement test. The examination date and details will be sent by Tunghai Chinese Language Center.
Community service and integration

The Huayu BEST Program is designed to facilitate meaningful interactions between international students and local Taiwanese students by integrating foreign learners into collaborative elementary or middle school settings.

The nature and duration of these interactions are collaboratively determined by the program coordinators and the partner schools.

Tunghai will assist with curriculum design ideas and recruit Taiwanese students to co-lead the camp team.
The Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL)

Students study in Taiwan for over three months should take a TOCFL test before returning home, assessing their learning outcomes.

The test cost is borne by the students.
Field Trips

Both the Huayu BEST Program and Tunghai Chinese Language Center organize field trips every semester.

From historical landmarks to scenic wonders, these field trips aim to deepen students' understanding of Taiwan, creating memorable experiences that complement their language learning journey.
Cultrual courses

From traditional arts to contemporary practices, the cultural courses at Tunghai Chinese Language Center span a wide spectrum, ensuring students engage in a vibrant and immersive cultural learning journey.
Buddy system

Tunghai will recruit Taiwanese students who are interested in foreign cultures and willing to share their culture to become Taiwanese buddies.

Foreign students and Taiwan buddies can schedule exchanges during free time.
